Literacy council seeks tutors

The Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council, an organization that helps adults learn to read, is looking for volunteers.

 

The council, which is located at 100 Sheridan Square, in East Liberty, has more than 100 people who are waiting for a personal tutor, according to a council news release.

 

People who are interested in teaching basic literacy, which includes reading, writing, math and computer skills and English as a Second Language lessons can attend workshops next month.

 

Volunteers who are interested in teaching English as a Second Language can attend a workshop at the Pittsburgh Chinese Church Oakland, 134 N. Dithridge St., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 10 or 17. Volunteers are not required to have foreign language experience, the news release said.

 

The council offers workshops for teaching basic literacy at the Green Tree Library, at 10 West Manilla Ave., on April 13, 15, 20 and 22 from 6 to 9 p.m.
